Iowa DOT - In 2006, ZOOM was awarded a contract from the Iowa DOT to install WiFI and touch screen interactive displays in all 40 Rest Areas in Iowa. Iowa was the first state in the nation to implement a combination WiFI/Interactive Display system statewide. Challenges included a variety of rest area configurations (some old, some new) with little or no night-time security. ZOOM overcame those challenges and has been successfully operating the system for IDOT for almost 3 years.
After 3 years:
- The system has gotten high marks from users and the state
- Almost no vandelism damage has occured
- Very little equipment replacement has been necessary
To deal with the challenges, ZOOM implemented a variety of interactive display options (shown below) including free standing kiosks and interactive displays built INTO THE EXISTING DISPLAY BOX. Some of the displays used a trackball configuratin as shown and others were driven by users touching the outside of the glass. All configurations proved very reliable.
A Traveler-Information-Rich interface was developed with Location-Based information delivered in real time to the traveler.
